Students of Asia University (AU) took part in the Brussel Innova Exhibition and won 2 silver and 2 bronze medals, creating a resounding victory. Five Taiwanese works were presented in the exhibition and four of them are from AU.

The works “Gram-Measuring Spoon” designed by 5 students of the Creative Product Design Department and “Attachable Lamp” by Chi-Tang Yen and Wen-Hsiu Lai won 2 silver medals, while the works “Chair with a Vertical Rod” by 4 students of the same department and “Automatic Rolling-back Cleaning Device” by Chieh-Ming Ko and Shin-Ying Tsai were granted 2 bronze medals.

The measuring spoons used in the kitchen or by the chef usually come in a bunch of several sizes for various grams. The work “Gram-Measuring Spoon” designed by Hsin-Cheng Lin, Yu-Han Tsai, Pei-Chun Haung, Han-Cheng Du, and Chen-Fang Ta of the Creative Product Design Department turns those different sizes into a single spoon that can control quantities by one hand. It takes a thumb to push the ruler to the scale needed, and the spoon will function just like a vernier caliper and measure the exact grams accordingly, which saves time on seasoning effectively.

Bicycles are often equipped with headlights or with warning lights in the rear. However, an auxiliary jig is required to install a lamp due to different sizes of the bike tube. All-in-one design of auxiliary jig and lamp can also be found on the market, but the large object itself is difficult to be replaced or disassembled. The work “Attachable Lamp” designed by Chi-Tang Yen and Wen-Hsiu Lai is a combination of a measuring tape and an LED, which is easy to carry around and attached to any places of a bicycle. Moreover, it can be worn as a safety lighting bracelet at night. Both of the two works mentioned above won silver medals.

One of the bronze medals is awarded to the work “Chair with a Vertical Rod” which is designed by Han-Cheng Du, and Chen-Fang Ta, Rui-Ying Hsiao, and Hsin-Cheng Lin. Han-Cheng Du said that many chairs in the kindergarten, elementary school, or junior high school were found to be dangerous because they would easily topple down to the ground when leaning backward. The designers added a strong rod, which is always vertical to the ground, on the back of a chair. The rod can be applied to any chairs and provide a support to protect children on the leaning chairs from being harmed.

The work “Automatic Rolling-back Cleaning Device” designed by Chieh-Ming Ko and Shin-Ying Tsai of the Creative Product Design Department also won a bronze medal. In the house, places under the closet or sofa are not easy to clean up. It is even tougher for the elderly and pregnant women to reach those areas. The students make use of the elastic theory and design an automatic rolling-back cleaning device which can stick dust or stains by rolling.
