Results of 2015 iF Design Award were announced. Yi-Fang Jiang, Qiao-Yu Deng, and Meng-Ya Tian from the Creative Product Design Department at Asia University (AU) were granted an iF Concept Design Award with a work entitled “Ice Net,” which was one of the latest top 100 iF-awarded works. Yi-Fang Jiang said that the work “Ice Net” was creative and practical and she hoped that it could be soon launched on the market through a technology transfer. Yi-Fang Jiang pointed out that people got athletic injuries more or less when exercising and that ice packs were sometimes used to ease the pain. However, the regular ice pack is not fixed on the wound and takes hands to keep it from falling off, which often interferes users’ mobility. In order to remedy this weakness, Yi-Fang Jiang and the two other students, Qiao-Yu Deng and Meng-Ya Tian, spent half a year on observation, concept development and design. After trying different structures of the ice pack, they created “Ice Net” that could be flexibly expanded, fit on the wound firmly and enable users to move freely. “We’re pleased to win the iF Award and hopefully our work could be soon turned into a product on the market through a technology transfer,” said the student designers.
The instructor Mei-Jun Liu said that this work made the ice pack fit on the wound without mobility difficulty, which has high practicability and a potential market, and that they were looking for opportunities of technology transfers. Sheng-Houng Lin, Chair of the Creative Product Design Department at AU, noted that the students of the Creative Design College had won 27 Red Dot Awards so far, including seven “Best of the Best” prizes, as well as three iF Design Awards in Germany and two G-Mark Good Design Awards in Japan. He also mentioned that totally 232 metals of international invention competitions were granted to AU students in five years, which was an outstanding performance. “In addition, six works, including the work ‘Luggage Scale,’ gained a total of technology-transfer royalty NTD 800,000, and some of them have already been productized for sale on the market,” sad Chairman Lin.
