Ling-Yu Wang, a senior of the Visual Communication Design Department at Asia University (AU), won a bronze medal in the 2014 International Poster Biennial in Mexico, one of the three big worldwide poster biennials, with her work entitled “Give Me a Hand.” Her instructor Ming-Lung Yu said that this poster was also granted the prize of “Best of the Best” in the 2014 Red Dot Design Award - Communication Design, which means it is a piece of work favored by the judges in both Europe and Latin America.

    Sheng-Min Hsieh, Chairman of the Visual Communication Design Department, said that 4700 pieces of works from 60 countries competed in this biennial contest and that only 347 pieces of them made it to the finals. “It’s truly not easy to select one work as the winner of the gold/silver/bronze medal in the student category based on the concepts of design trend, creativity, visual beauty, etc.,” he added.

  “‘Waste on Food’ is the topic of the International Poster Biennial in Mexico this year;” said Professor Ming-Lung Yu. “Ling-Yu Wang emphasizes the insufficiency of provisions and the uneven distribution of food globally in her poster, which also tells people living with plenty of food should care more about refugees and offer help to those in hunger.”

  Ling-Yu Wang said that she designed the poster by woodcut art, hoping to draw people’s attention to the issues of food shortage through hands reaching out either to ask for help or to offer help. She also expressed a desire for food by reflecting the “imaginary shapes” of a fork as well as the African continent formed with “real hands.”

  Also, Zi-Xuan Lin, a senior of the Visual Communication Design Department, was nominated in the same contest for her work entitled “Greed Makes You a Monster,” which received the 2014 Red Dot Design Award - Communication Design as well.

  Founded in 1990, the International Poster Biennial in Mexico has been held for 25 years. It is one of the 3 biggest biennial contests in the world as well as one of the 5 biggest poster exhibitions, including the International Poster Exhibition in Finland, the International Poster Biennial in Poland, the International Poster Triennial in Japan, and the International Invitational Poster Exhibition in the U. S. “It is one of the international competitions in art and design that the Ministry of Education (MOE) encourages students to enter,” said Department Chairman Sheng-Min Hsieh. “What a great honor for AU to won the bronze medal among such a large number of global students in design!”
