In the 2014 Seoul International Invention Fair, Asia University (AU) Student Invention Team won a total victory of 15 medals (6 golds, 5 silvers, 4 bronzes) and 2 special prizes. In addition, AU was awarded the best school team from Taiwan as well as among other countries. Six works of gold medals are designed by students from the Departments of Creative Product Design and Visual Communication Design at AU, including “Multi-function Trolley” by Yu-Xiang Lin, Guang-Han Wang, and Yi-Shan Wu, “Guiding Seatbelt Buckle” by Jun-Yi Jiang, Yu-Ting Zeng, Rui-Ying Xiao, Yun-Jie Tsai, Jie-Ming Ge, and Xin-Ying Tsai, “Food-Heating Device — Hot Cup” by An-Yu Zeng and Sheng-Pei Yang, “Projecting Story Book” by Yue-Rong He, Yan-Ting Liu, Su-Xuan Lin, Ying-Wen Chen, and Yi-Jun Xia, “See-through Iron” by Yun-Jie Tsai, Yan-Bei Zeng, Da-Jun Huang, and Ting-Xi Liu, as well as “Smart Tag for Tea Bag Temperature” by Huei-Ling Li and Bou-Xun Li. Moreover, the work “Environment Friendly Hanger” designed by Xin-Jie Ke of the Creative Product Design Department and the work “Attachable Lamp” by Ji-Tan Yan and Wen-Xiu Lai were awarded respectively a silver medal and special prizes of Malaysia and Thailand.
Lecturer I-Tien Chu instructed An-Yu Zeng and Sheng-Pei Yang to design the “Food-Heating Device — Hot Cup.” They used quicklime with water to generate heat and replaced plastic materials by metals to prevent poisonous substances caused by heating, which makes the cup reusable without wasting resources. Furthermore, they lowered the height of the external heating cup to keep the reaction gases out of the removable inner cup and enhance the usage safety. An-Yu Zeng said that she came up with the idea to keep the coffee warm with the mobile “Hot Cup” when she found the coffee often got cold in a short time and that she was extremely happy to win the gold medal because she did not expect to. The work “Multi-function Trolley” designed by Yu-Xiang Lin, Guang-Han Wang, and Yi-Shan Wu gained a gold medal as well, and received a lot of inquiries for commercialization in the fair. Guang-Han Wang said that the “Multi-function Trolley” could carry large objects, such as computers and piles of documents and that it could be folded as an indoor book stand to store items and save space in the meantime. “My mother will be very happy with my work ‘See-through Iron’ receiving a gold medal, because it was actually inspired by her when I saw her having troubles with ironing wrinkled button areas of clothes,” said Yun-Jie Tsai of the Creative Product Design Department. She designed a transparent fillister of V-shape metal on the iron base to make it easier to see the buttons and iron around them. She also added insulating materials that extended from both sides of the iron and aligned with the metal bottom, which helps protect hands from being burned.
